VOUCHERS FROM VETERANS:

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB 222 by Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, which states the importance of housing for veterans and declares that housing discrimination on the basis of veteran or military status is against public policy. This bill will prohibit rental property owners from refusing to accept Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Vouchers. However, the issue is not really about discrimination against veterans–we are all proud of the men and women who serve our country–it is about the restrictions the government places on accepting vouchers. Forcing contracts, even for good causes, such as veteran’s rights, is always a bad idea, and it obviates the need for the government to offer fair and attractive terms to landlords.

Always go out of your way to help a veteran–they have earned our respect and gratitude–but be wary to governments who will force altruism and compassion upon you. If you have questions about your rights and liabilities as a landlord or tenant, please contact our office.
